Conserving Water

As the temperature rises, so does our water use. Summer water use in Central Otago is amongst the highest in New Zealand on a per person basis and continues to grow. This is partly because we use water carelessly.

Use water wisely – if you don’t need it don’t use it.

Why Conserve Water?

Pumping water from the source, treating it and piping it to your door is expensive. If we all use less water we can lower the cost of providing it.

Excessive summer water use means the water supply system has to work hard to keep up with demand. In some places excessive use can affect availability for fire fighting.

Saving Water in Your Garden

Should I Irrigate?

Incorrect garden watering wastes large amounts of water. It also washes nutrients and minerals out of the soil and does not always mean more growth. Often gardens will do better on less water. If water is running off your garden you are watering too heavily and faster than the water can soak in. To make the most of irrigation water:

  • Use fine spraying irrigators and sprinklers
  • Do not flood irrigate
  • Water when it is cool and there is little wind
