Water Restrictions

The Central Otago District Council gives notice that from 1 December 2009 water restrictions for the watering of lawns and gardens for un-metered properties in Alexandra, Clyde, Cromwell, Bannockburn, Omakau, Ophir are in place this year.

  • Properties with even street numbers only water on even days of the month.
  • Properties with odd street numbers only water on odd days of the month.

Water conservation is an important part of Council’s commitment to efficient usage of a limited resource. We need your support.

Residents are advised that watering is more effective in the early morning or evening.

Water Conservation

Coming into the hot dry season means it’s time for everyone to start conserving water again. Start thinking now about ‘how can you do more with less’. Simple actions include:

  • Fixing your leaking taps, water your garden and not the pavement, fit timers to your sprinklers, get advice on efficient plumbing fixtures for your home, avoid watering in the heat of the day are just some.

Let water conservation become a daily practice. Act now will reduce the need for us to enforce a total irrigation ban.

Keeping water consumption down does have advantages:

  • Avoids big rates hikes to buy bigger pumps and pipes
  • Keeps electricity for pumping and treatment chemical costs reasonable
  • Means there is enough water in reserve to fight fires
  • Allows our community to grow and remain vibrant.

You can help us conserve water by reporting water leaks on the road or footpath, or letting us know about excessive water users by calling Council on 03 440 0056

Did you know:

  • Just one leaking tap can waste as much as 260 cubic metres a year, the same as the average household consumes in an entire year.
  • That when you water your garden in the heat of the day 50% is lost through evaporation.
