National honours for Swim School

12 April 2017

Both Central Otago Swim School and its Swim School Coordinator were recipients of national awards at this year’s Swimming New Zealand Awards.

The Awards were presented at a gala dinner in Auckland on 8 April.

Central Otago Swim School won a ‘Recognition of Contribution’ award in the education category for its outstanding contribution to the national goal of ‘all Kiwis enjoying the water safety’.

In the commendation read out at the awards it was noted how in the space of 18 months the school had grown from seven to 20 instructors and 140 to 500-plus students through the learn to swim programme.  The Swim School team had also picked up extra schools through the schools swimming programme, and had taken the Swim School “on the road” to hold swim school classes in Omakau, Ranfurly and Roxburgh over the summer.

Central Otago Swim School Coordinator Sue Stokes was also presented with an individual ‘Recognition of Contribution’ award for her leadership and development of the Swim School programme.

The education awards were part of a major night of celebration for New Zealand swimming, at which prizes were also given out for club and elite athletes and coaches. Gold medal-winning Paralympian Sophie Pascoe was named New Zealand’s Swimmer of the Year.
