Dragons and Knights to invade district’s libraries these holidays

19 June 2015

Beware all those venturing into Central Otago District Libraries these school holidays as dragons and knights transform these spaces into a medieval playground.

To celebrate Millers Flat author Kyle Mewburn's book tour of the Dragon Knight series, the Maniototo, Alexandra, Cromwell and Roxburgh libraries' holiday programmes are themed around his books.

The two sessions during the first week of the holidays will focus on creating paper mache dragons.

Week two's task is to create swords, amour and props for the children to accessorise both themselves and the four libraries, which will all host a special visit by the Dragon Knight series' author.

The new series stars a shape-shifting dragon-boy called Merek and follows his adventures. Critics have been full of praise for the award-winning children's writer's latest offering, with Booksellers NZ saying the series "will make young readers laugh, gasp and squirm".

One of the titles in the series – Dragon Knight:  Fire! – made both the judges' and the kids' top fives in the finals of the junior fiction category of this year's New Zealand Book Awards for Children and Young Adults.

The four events on the book tour will have a dress code, with junior guests (and those enthusiastic parents and caregivers too) invited to don suit and armour, or tail and talons, and come dressed as a character from the Dragon Knight series.

While the holiday programme is restricted to the first 20 children to register per library, the book tour events are open to the community, with people being asked to RSVP so enough of a banquet is served up at morning and afternoon tea times.
