We want a nation inspired to Keep New Zealand Beautiful! So every year, Keep New Zealand Beautiful provides the resources needed for community groups, schools, individuals and businesses to get out in their communities and clean up their patch in time for summer.
It's one of the largest nationwide community events held in New Zealand with tens of thousands of volunteers participating in the collection of litter – a big step towards keeping New Zealand beautiful.
In Central Otago the Keep Alexandra Clyde Beautiful (KACB) group and the Central Otago District Council (CODC) team up to promote the events in our community. Last year we had preschools, schools, businesses, service groups and groups of neighbours all participating.
This year's Keep New Zealand Beautiful Clean-Up Week runs from the 11-17 September and it's easy to get involved. Groups and individuals can either join an organised open group event registered in their area, or set up their own event. All events must be registered on the Keep New Zealand Beautiful website www.knzb.org.nz/calendar/clean-up-week-2017/.
Once an event is registered KNZB will send everything to carry out a clean-up including: collection bags for recycling and rubbish, gloves and certificates for participants. Evaluation forms and an Event Guide can be downloaded with useful information about how to conduct a clean-up, health and safety and first aid information.
Those who don't have access to the internet or who would like help in registering their event can contact David Beer on 021 024 09163 or email@example.com. David can also help if you don't have a project site in mind.
Central Otago District Council (CODC) will pay the costs at the local transfer stations to dispose of items that can't be recycled. Recyclables include clean materials such as drink cans and bottles, glass bottles, cardboard and paper. Chip packets, food items and dirty material are non-recyclable and will have to go to landfill. To receive a chit for free disposal at the transfer station please contact CODC's Waste Minimisation Officer Sophie Mander on firstname.lastname@example.org or (03) 440 0056 prior to the event.
