What's On

Reading to Dogs

The team at Alexandra Library is excited to run the Reading to Dogs programme thanks to the support of the Outreach Therapy Pets programme - a joint initiative between St John New Zealand and SPCA New Zealand.

The reading to dogs programme is designed to provide a relaxed environment that encourages children to practice their reading skills and develop a love of reading. The programme, which was officially launched on 19 June, runs weekly on a Wednesday from 3.15 to 4.30pm. There are four 15-minute sessions available each week for children to read a story to a furry companion.

Petal the placid 8-year old shihtzu-Maltese-wheaten - featured in this video (above) - is a fully accredited Outreach Therapy Dog.

Bailey the sprightly spoodle puppy, who takes turn about on alternate weeks, is not an accredited therapy dog, he's far too young (even in dog years!) for training ...but he is keen to follow in Petal's pawprints one day and be able to wear that bandanna!

Library staff and the dog's owner are present at all times to help facilitate the sessions.

Book your spot!

You can book a spot by phoning the Alexandra Library on 03 448 9412 or popping in and chatting to one of the team.
