If you are planning to build or renovate your home or business, almost everything you build needs to meet a number of standards and regulations like the Building Act 2004. Council is the Building Consent Authority for Central Otago providing building consents for work that needs approval and inspection under the Act.

We are here to help you get all the right information you need for building consents. For any major projects make an appointment with one of our building inspectors first.

We suggest you get a professional to help with design work, drawings, specifications and documentation as building and resource consent applications can be complex. For more detailed guidance go to the Ministry of Building, Innovation and Employment website

For simpler projects this website or a Building Control Officer should be able to give you all the guidance you need.

Resolving Problems (Complaints process)
Complaints with regard to the building team's level of service should, in the first instance, be forwarded to the Council's Regulatory Services Manager who will decide on further action to be taken in regard to the complaint. If the outcome is deemed unsatisfactory by the complainant, the matter will be escalated to the Executive Manager of Planning and Environment.

All formal complaints to the Council must be received in writing (email or letter.) Complaints should be addressed to: Regulatory Services ManagerCentral Otago District Council, PO Box 122, Alexandra 9340 or emailed to:

Our standard response timeframe is an acknowledgement within two working days and a response in 10 working days. However, if the issue needs more time we will let you know and keep you updated.

If you  have any queries, concerns or complaints about Council's building control functions, guidance on resolving problems can found on the Building Performance website

The Building Act has provision to obtain a determination. A determination is a legally binding ruling made by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) about matters of doubt or dispute to do with building work. Guidance about determinations can also be found on the Building Performance website.
