8.5 Tents, marquees and similar lightweight structures
A building consent is not required to erect a marquee if it is less than 100m2 and will be up for less than one month.
A discretionary exemption can be applied for to erect a marquee if it is 100m2 or greater and will be up for less than one month. For more information go to Exempt Building Work
A building consent is required if the marquee will be in use for more than one month.

When applying for a building consent or an exemption to erect a marquee the following form needs to be completed and included with the application:
You will also need to provide:
- Record of Title less than 3 months old
- Site plan with details of egress, fire safety provisions, assembly areas, toilet locations
- Dimensioned floor plan showing the location of exit signs and fire extinguishers
- Documentation confirming marquee surface finishes meet New Zealand Building Code Group Number requirements
- Details of restraints/tie downs (these can vary for wind zones/speeds)
- Design calculations
