Rates Rebates
What is a rates rebate?
The Central Otago District Council administers the Rates Rebate Scheme on behalf of the Department of Internal Affairs.
A rates rebate is a partial discount on your rates bill - meaning you would pay less for your annual rates.
If you own your home and are on a low income, you may be eligible for a rebate. Your eligibility and the amount you could receive depend on factors such as:
- the total amount of rates you pay
- how many dependants live with you
- your total household income before tax
- the ownership of your property
(you must be the registered owner of the property) - your living situation
- if you have a SuperGold card.
Updates to who can apply
The Government has updated the eligibility criteria for the Rates Rebate Scheme, which means more property owners may now qualify for a rebate.
You can read more at: Who is eligible to get a rates rebate | New Zealand Government
If you didn’t qualify in previous years, you may be eligible this year due to changes in income thresholds and other criteria. We encourage all eligible ratepayers to check their eligibility and apply.
When can you apply?
Applications open on 1 July 2026 and close 30 June 2027 for the current rating year. Your application is due to the council by 30 June 2027.
Please note that we are not able to process applications until the Otago Regional Council set their rates in early September.
What supporting information do I need to provide?
Rebates are granted under the Rates Rebate Act 1973, and you must provide income information so the rebate can be calculated.
You will also have to supply the following supporting information:
- a copy of the reverse side of your SuperGold card (if you have one), and
- proof of your income for the previous tax year
A summary printout of your income can be obtained from Inland Revenue.
Search: "request a summary of income"
Select the date range from 1 April 2025 - 31 March 2026
