Community invited to give feedback on alcohol bylaw

Central Otago District Council is inviting community feedback on its proposed Alcohol Restrictions in Public Places Bylaw 2019.

Council's Bylaw proposes alcohol restrictions from 10pm to 7am the following day on every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday within the townships of Alexandra, Clyde and Cromwell. Plus, it includes restrictions around the Alexandra Blossom Festival, Christmas Day and New Year's Eve.

CODC Regulatory Services Manager Lee Webster told Councillors this week that the bylaw conditions were the same as Council's previous Liquor Ban Bylaw 2011, with the addition of Cromwell to the permanent alcohol restriction in recognition of the town's growth.

"This bylaw reflects a collaborative approach between Central Otago District Council, the Police and Public Health South, to assist in reducing alcohol related harm at times where evidence demonstrates a need, and in the locations where there is a need, rather than an a simplistic total ban 24/7 everywhere."

The Statement of Proposal and proposed Alcohol Restrictions in Public Places Bylaw are available on Council's website ​and feedback can be made online. Copies of the documents and submission forms are also available from any Council service centre. Submissions close on Wednesday 19 June 2019.
