15 December 2017

Twelve Otago Landmarks Whenua Tohunga sites were announced today at an official launch held at Olveston, Dunedin, by Hon David Clark.

Three of these iconic locations are found here in Central Otago - the Otago Central Rail Trail, Bannockburn Sluicings, and Hayes Engineering Works.

Otago Landmarks Whenua Tohunga is a culture and heritage programme showcasing significant Otago landmarks that have shaped our nation and created our stories.

Central Otago Mayor Tim, who was at the launch event, said the Central Otago landmark sites covered well both the geography and the history of the district.

"The Otago Central Rail Trail crosses a large portion of the district and harks back to the days of steam railroad while being the premium drawcard for the modern passion of mountain bike riding. The Bannockburn Sluicings also offers stunning landscape and history in one. The third Landmark Site at Hayes Engineering Works is a snapshot of both a remarkable time and a remarkable couple in the history of rural New Zealand."
