This month Council is holding free Bokashi composting workshops to help reduce the amount of organic waste going into our landfill.
Organic waste includes all food waste and green waste.
When organic waste is buried with other rubbish in the landfill, it breaks down and releases methane and we lose all the valuable nutrients!
Currently, more than 30% of the waste going to Victoria Flats landfill is organic waste.
Instead of sending your organic waste to landfill, Bokashi is a simple technique from Japan that 'pickles' your waste to produce a nutrient-rich organic matter. This can then be used in garden or composting systems.
Remember that a car load of green waste can also be taken to all Council transfer stations for free - so dealing with organics is easy!
Learn how you can make your own Bokashi system by registering today at your local library for one of the sessions listed on the poster below.
