Six Central Otago residents have today been welcomed as new New Zealand citzens in a special citizenship ceremony held in Council Chambers in Alexandra.

The new citizens were invited to share something of the journey which brought them to reside in this district and these were read out by Mayoress Bernice Lepper.

Sharon McCulloch, for instance, met a "crazy Kiwi" in Europe who brought her to New Zealand for a visit in 2000. She "fell in love with this beautiful country", which reminded her of the Scottish Highlands but with "considerably better" weather.

Jenny Statham, who has a small farm in Tarras, and son Asher who is studying at Otago University, who had been holidaying in Central Otago for many years before moving here, said it would "be nice to finally be Kiwis officially as well as at heart".

Mr Lepper said he has always been tempted to capture all the stories new citizens share at the ceremonies into a book, which would be a great "infomercial for Central Otago".

A warm Central Otago welcome to our newest citizens!
