Newcomers are going to get a leg up in the business world.
To make this happen, Business South Inc, Business Mentors NZ, and Central Otago’s Welcoming Communities have joined forces to give newcomers a leg-up in the business world for those up and comers who are new to the Central Otago district.
“Moving to a new district, or halfway across the globe, is overwhelming at the best of times – let alone understanding an unfamiliar professional landscape,” Central Otago District Council Welcoming Communities Officer Heather Harries, said. “A business mentor can provide guidance, help build confidence and capability, provide industry knowledge, fresh perspectives, and a sounding board for new ideas.”
One successful recipient is Justina Thevede-Bain, who moved to Cromwell, Central Otago, seven months ago from Eswatini in Southern Africa, leaving behind her own successful culinary business. For eight years, Justina specialised in event catering, participated in food festivals, provided mentoring for aspiring chefs and conducted training workshops; with a Swazi mother and Mozambican father, she brings a diverse range of cultural cuisines and flavours to share.
Since moving to New Zealand, Justina has been exploring ways to bring her passion and experience to the local food scene. However, she was becoming increasingly worried that her dream would never become a reality – not knowing where to start, who to connect with, or how to navigate the unfamiliar business landscape.
“When Justina discovered her application for a business mentor was successful, she wept for joy – a chance for guidance and insight, to build networks, and adapt her expertise to suit her new home, while staying true to her roots. We look forward to seeing Justina grow her business concept in Central Otago,” Heather said.
“The day I received that email, I felt a weight being lifted off my shoulders,” recipient Justina said.
