New $150,000 event fund open for Central Otago applications
A new $150,000 fund is open for applications, giving Central Otago event organisers a chance to grow their events and bring more visitors to the district. The Central Otago District Event Fund, launched by Tourism Central Otago on behalf of Central Otago District Council, is designed to attract and develop events that deliver real economic, visitation, and community benefits across the district.
The fund supports eligible events held between November 2026 and October 2027 within the Central Otago district. It's aimed at professionally run events that bring in visitors from outside the district, spread visitor numbers more evenly across the year and around the region, and encourage people to stay longer.
Tourism Central Otago Head of Destination Anthony Longman says events play a key role in supporting the district's visitor economy and delivering benefits for local communities.
"Central Otago already hosts a wide range of events that reflect our people, places and point of difference," Mr Longman says.
"This fund is about being deliberate – backing events that bring new visitors in, support local businesses, and help build a events calendar that works right across the year. We're especially interested in events with strong visitor appeal and clear economic benefit, that are well run, add value for the community, and have real potential to grow."
Applications are open to new Signature Events and Developing Regional Events, and should align with the Eventful Central Event Development Framework and the Central Otago Destination Management Plan (DMP).
Each application will be assessed on its own merits and how it contributes to the wider Central Otago events portfolio, including seasonal and geographic spread. Independent advice may also be sought for events of national significance or those receiving national funding.
Successful applicants will sign a partnership agreement with the fund, which may cover up to 25% of total event costs.
