Alexandra Pool to host Ice Swimming Championships

Alexandra Pool will welcome the country's toughest cold-water swimmers from 15 July for the International Ice Swimming Association (IISA) New Zealand & Oceania Pool Championships. For the third time, Central Otago will host the event, following successful championships in 2022 and 2024.

The event brings together New Zealand and Oceania's top ice swimmers as they compete in one of the world's fastest-growing endurance sports. Competitors will push themselves to their limits over four days in pursuit of national titles, Oceania honours, and selection for world events.

Official ice swimming events take place in water measuring 5°C or colder, with competitors wearing only a standard swimsuit, a pair of goggles, and a silicone swim cap. Wetsuits, gloves, boots and any thermal protection are not permitted, making the sport an incredible test of both physical endurance and mental resilience.

The championships are the main selection event for the Frozen Ferns, New Zealand's national ice swimming team. Swimmers will be aiming to achieve qualifying performances and secure their place representing New Zealand at the 2027 IISA World Ice Swimming Championships in Oradea, Romania.

Around 45 swimmers, including two para swimmers, are expected to compete across a full programme. The event will be supported by 12 key officials, five medics, volunteer timekeepers and helpers, along with approximately 30 supporters from around New Zealand.

Safety is at the heart of every IISA event. Before competing, every swimmer must complete a medical assessment and ECG. On arrival, swimmers also undergo a further health check, including temperature and blood pressure monitoring. Throughout the event, experienced doctors, nurses, and medical volunteers are on site to ensure every swim is conducted safely.

The championships will feature individual and relay events across all disciplines from 50 metres through to the challenging 1,000 metre freestyle
