Central Otago looks to strengthen digital connectivity
Reliable, high-performing digital connectivity is increasingly important for Central Otago’s businesses, communities and public services, but coverage, capacity and service resilience still vary across the district, particularly in rural areas.
Central Otago District Council has issued a Request for Information (RFI) to better understand the technologies, opportunities and partnerships that could improve digital connectivity across the district and the wider Otago region.
Economic Development Manager Nick Lanham says the RFI is an opportunity to hear from organisations with ideas, expertise and solutions that could help address the district’s connectivity challenges.
“There won’t be a single solution to meet all of Central Otago’s connectivity needs. We want to hear from organisations about the technologies, partnerships and opportunities that could help improve connectivity across the district.”
The RFI is open to telecommunications providers, technology companies, infrastructure owners and investors, industry bodies, community organisations and others with relevant experience or ideas. Organisations that do not currently operate in Central Otago are also encouraged to respond if they have experience or approaches that could benefit the district.
“We want to start a conversation about what the future of digital connectivity could look like for Central Otago,” says Mr Lanham. “Technology and demand have changed significantly in recent years, so it’s important we understand what’s possible.”
The RFI is seeking insights into current and emerging technologies, existing demand and unmet needs, barriers to expanding coverage and capacity, potential partnerships and the role Council could play in facilitating improved connectivity.
It is not a procurement process, and Council is not seeking detailed proposals or pricing. Responses will help inform future planning, investment and collaboration.
Responses to the RFI are due by Friday 11 September 2026.
