The Ministry for the Environment (MfE) is partnering with Central Otago District Council to carry out research into the green bin collections. This is happening the week of the 8 April 2024.
This is part of a larger national research project on food scrap collections involving several councils around the country. MfE is funding the research but will provide a detailed report to CODC with the findings. The data collected will be used for emissions calculations, as well as measuring gains for our waste reduction targets.
The research aims to understand why people do and don’t use the collection service. A random selection of households will receive a survey to complete. If you receive a survey in your post box, we hope you will take the opportunity to take part. There is a chance to win a $100 Prezzy card for those who return it. Your feedback will help us to improve the green bin service.
MfE recently set requirements that all councils throughout the country must offer a kerbside food scraps collection by 2030 at the latest. By introducing an organics kerbside collection seven years before this deadline has meant that Central Otago can be used as a case study for other Councils to learn from.
Residents will not notice any impact to their green bin collections.
