Council Awards Contract for Critical Water Infrastructure Upgrades

A critical water infrastructure upgrade in Alexandra will begin this year with HEB Construction awarded the $1.33 million contract.

The Central Otago District Council (CODC) has prioritised replacing ageing water pipes in areas that are nearing the end of their useful life, to ensure a more reliable water supply for residents while future-proofing Alexandra's water network.

Water infrastructure being replaced

• Bridge Hill Rising Main: This nearly 100-year-old concrete-lined steel pipeline is a vital link between Bridge Hill and Alexandra's wider water network, servicing many properties. Following a significant burst in 2015 and a minor break in 2021, engineering assessments have determined the infrastructure has reached the end of its useful life. The challenging terrain includes sections of pipe laid above ground, dating back to when the Aronui Dam supplied the town's water.
• Enterprise Street: The 70-year-old pipeline serves as the main water source for Dunstan High School, Terrace Primary School and local early childcare facilities. This ageing infrastructure will be replaced with modern pipes to eliminate water discolouration, reduce maintenance costs and improve resilience.

CODC Mayor Tamah Alley said the investment represents a significant step forward in addressing the district's infrastructure challenges.

"These upgrades are important for ensuring reliable water supply to our schools, early childhood centres and residential properties. The Bridge Hill Rising Main has served our community for nearly a century; now it's time to invest in modern infrastructure that will serve Alexandra for generations to come."

The contract award follows CODC's ongoing commitment to water infrastructure improvements across the district, with construction scheduled to commence in June and completion expected by December 2025.

"We're pleased to partner with HEB Construction on this essential project that will enhance water reliability and address the infrastructure challenges posed by our unique terrain and ageing assets," Patrick Keenan, CODC Capital Projects Programme Manager said. “There will be some periods of disruption; however, we will keep the public informed of traffic management measures and any water shutdowns required during construction.”
