Statement from CODC Chief Executive Peter Kelly

The Central Otago District Council has been made aware of public concern regarding Vincent ward councillor-elect Dave McKenzie in a matter dating back to 2018 in connection with contracting work he was carrying out for Council.

While the Council thoroughly reviews the findings from the previous investigation, Council will remain transparent about the matter and inform the public in due course.

Statement from CODC Mayor Tamah Alley

Over the weekend, I became aware of social media posts alleging that a recently elected councillor was previously involved in unethical conduct while working as a contractor for council. I take these allegations very seriously.

My expectation of all elected members is that their integrity and suitability to serve the community must be beyond reproach at all times. I have discussed the matter with the Chief Executive and understand that several formal requests for information have already been received.

I want to assure our community that any information held by council relevant to these allegations will be released through the appropriate channels under the Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act (LGOIMA).

The mayor does not have the power to remove any members who are elected by their communities. Councillor-elect McKenzie met the eligibility requirements set by the Electoral Officer to run for office.
