On a balmy spring evening in Alexandra in early October, about 40 people—of all ages and nationalities—came together to share food, stories, and laughter. The buffet-style set up was a vibrant showcase of global flavours: Colombian Arepas, Chilean hot dogs, Ukrainian Olivye, Argentinian empanadas, Brazilian cheese bread, Chinese chicken with cashews, South African chakalaka, Nepalese dumplings, fragrant curries and ghee rice, fresh guacamole, a baked sandwich called sanduíche do conde in Portuguese, and Kiwi-style mini pavlovas— to name a few.
While the adults enjoyed second (and even third) helpings, the gardens echoed with the joyful chaos of children playing, creating a lively and heartwarming atmosphere.
The Alexandra-Clyde Multicultural Partnership Group was established in October 2024 to foster connection, friendship, and support among newcomers, particularly those who are also navigating English as an additional language. After a few initial meetings to define a shared vision, the group has hosted informal events such as park meet-and-greets and group walks in the hills.
In May 2025, about 18 members gathered for a shared meal and agreed it was a great success. With interest growing, the group has continued to expand—and last Friday night’s gathering proved just how strong that momentum is. There’s already much chatter about more events in the future.
