A critical bridge upgrade in Alexandra will begin early 2026 with local company Breen Construction awarded the $1.248 million contract.
The Central Otago District Council has prioritised replacing the structural timber components on the Little Valley Road Bridge in Alexandra.
Deterioration of these components has seen heavy vehicle weight restrictions placed on the bridge. The refurbishment work will see the bridge restored to full Class 1 Heavy Vehicle capacity providing full accessibility for the local community and wider public.
Council is also working with the contractor on options to maintain pedestrian and cycling access on Little Valley Road Bridge while construction is completed.
A temporary Bailey bridge is currently being installed between the Linger and Die Park and Graveyard Gulley Road and will provide vehicle access for the public including Class 1 heavy vehicle access while the Little Valley Road Bridge refurbishment is completed.
The contract award follows Council's ongoing commitment to bridge infrastructure improvements across the district, with construction scheduled to commence in January 2026 and completion expected by June 2026.
"We're pleased to partner with Breen Construction on this essential project that will provide future resilience for a key bridge on the roading network," CODC Roading Manager, Paul Fleet said.
“There will be some periods of minor disruption; however, we will keep the public informed of any impacts as the project progresses.
