Vincent Community Board makes recommendations on tree removal
The Vincent Community Board (VCB) recommended the removal of four Claret Ash trees from the Centrepoint Carpark in Alexandra. The Board acknowledged the trees’ visual appeal and functional value, particularly the shade they provide to carpark users in the summer. However, the decision to remove the trees was made due to concerns over leaf litter causing drainage issues and roots creating potential trip hazards in the carpark area. A budget of $20,000 has been allocated in the 2025-2034 Long-term Plan for removal and replanting.
This recommendation will go to Council on 17 December and if approved, the trees will be removed prior to Autumn 2026.
The VCB also agreed to seek community input on the proposed removal of thirty-six Black Poplar trees from State Highway 8, at the entry to Molyneux Estate in Alexandra. The trees were originally planted for screening about 25 years ago and have now achieved that purpose. They are creating some issues for neighbours, including some trees producing white, cottony fluff around November – December. There are also concerns about the tree’s invasive root systems impacting adjacent neighbours’ properties.
It should be noted that the trees proposed for removal are just the outer row of trees along the highway, the smaller amenity trees planted closer to the subdivision will remain and are expected to grow better without being suppressed by the faster growing Poplar trees.
“We acknowledge the aesthetic appeal these Poplar trees provide to the entrance to Alexandra. Unfortunately, as they continue to mature, they are exhibiting characteristics that make them unsuitable for this location,” said Central Otago District Council Parks and Recreation Manager Gordon Bailey.
A consultation plan will be developed, and the community will be asked to provide feedback in the new year on the future of these trees. All submissions will be considered by the VCB before providing a recommendation to Council.
If Council approves the VCB recommendation, the trees will be removed in Winter 2026.
A budget of $50,000 has been allocated for tree and stump removal and replanting. The replacement plan involves planting Flowering Cherry trees as part of the Alexandra Rotary Club’s Trees for Babies programme. The new trees would produce blossoms around the time of the Alexandra Blossom Festival.
