Vital maintenance is about to start at the Ranfurly Wastewater Treatment Plant, with work focused on removing built-up sludge from the oxidation pond and wetlands.
A recent survey found a significant accumulation of sludge, prompting this planned desludging to keep the system running efficiently and maintain good environmental performance.
This essential maintenance will deliver two key operational benefits:
- Prolonged Retention Time: Sludge removal will increase the volume of the pond, which extends the retention time, improving the overall treatment process.
- Improved Biological Treatment: The removal of excess sludge assists with optimising the biological treatment processes within the pond system.
“This work is a critical part of maintaining the treatment plant,” says CODC Capital Projects Programme Manager Patrick Keenan. “It’s not just about clearing material; it's about restoring the plant's capacity and efficiency. By removing the sludge, we ensure the oxidation pond can perform its role optimally, securing the long-term effectiveness of the Ranfurly wastewater treatment system for the community."
Council has awarded the contract for this work to Glasgow Contractors | Environmental Enhancement Specialists, with work expected to begin in December and be completed by June 2026.
