Council to Remove Centrepoint Carpark Trees
At its final Council meeting, held yesterday, 17 December 2025, the Central Otago District Council (CODC) agreed to proceed with the removal of three significant trees at the Alexandra Centrepoint carpark, following a complex debate balancing community amenity with property liability.
The trees, which have been a feature of the carpark for over 30 years, were the subject of a long-standing concern from neighbouring business owners, Limerick Properties. Reports highlighted that leaf litter was blocking roof drains, leading to significant flooding and damage to adjacent commercial properties, while root systems were creating trip hazards in the public carpark.
It was noted that Council is now dealing with the consequences of decisions made more than 30 years ago. Councillors discussed the importance of choosing the right trees today so that future Councils won’t face the same issues decades from now.
During the meeting, Councillors raised concerns regarding the lack of clear definitions between public and private responsibilities in the area. It was noted that the current arrangement, where the Council maintains trees on what is essentially private land, has created a "grey area" for liability.
A key amendment was added to the final resolution, directing the Chief Executive to investigate and formalise the ownership and maintenance agreements for the carpark going forward.
“We understand how important trees are to our community," Vincent Community Board Chair, Jayden Cromb said.
"This has been a long‑standing issue, and we’re pleased to have reached a resolution and look forward to the completed replanting plan soon. We also look forward to the maintenance agreements and responsibilities for this space being clearly defined for the future.”
The trees are scheduled to be removed prior to Autumn 2026. Council staff will work on a suitable replanting plan that provides amenity and visual appeal without risking future damage to the surrounding infrastructure.
