The Central Otago District Council (CODC) has scheduled maintenance at the Alexandra Centrepoint carpark for Tuesday, 24 March, and Wednesday, 25 March 2026. This upcoming work involves the removal of three significant trees, specifically one Liquidambar and two Fraxinus angustifolia subsp. oxycarpa (Claret Ash). To ensure public safety during the felling and removal process, the entire Centrepoint carpark will be closed to all vehicles and pedestrians for the duration of these two days.
The decision to remove these specific trees follows. local business Limerick Properties Limited (LPL) highlighting that leaf litter from these trees has caused drainage issues on the roofs of surrounding buildings, leading to internal flooding.
Following the tree removal, Council staff will replant. Replanting will be similar the recent planting carried out on the corner of Ennis St and State Highway 8 following the removal of two trees about 2 years ago. By performing the removal in late March, the Council ensures the site is cleared before the peak autumn leaf fall and is prepared for fresh planting before the winter season begins.
