The Cromwell cenotaph has been successfully relocated to its new centre‑stage position within the Memorial Gardens, alongside the yet to be named community facility by the lake.
The relocation marks a key milestone in the development of the Memorial Gardens, which will honour the service and sacrifice of all those who served. Once complete, the grounds will feature the cenotaph alongside a dedicated memorial wall and remembrance plaques.
The complex relocation was carried out by Naylor Love, working in partnership with subcontractor R&R Hiab Services.
Hayley Stockdale, Senior Project Manager Naylor Love, confirmed the move went perfectly.
“The lift and final placement were executed smoothly, highlighting the strength, professionalism, and dedication of the wider team. Knowing the deep significance of the cenotaph to the community, we held many planning discussions to consider all aspects of engineering and coordination ahead of the move,” she said.
Denis Ryan, President of Cromwell RSA, said seeing the cenotaph in place was an important step in the wider project.
“Now the cenotaph is in its position, waiting for the eternal flame to light up in the entrance. The flame will be a reminder to us all of those who committed their lives for us. Then the hall will be alive,” Mr Ryan said.
Construction on the Memorial Gardens is progressing steadily, with planning underway to host the 2026 Anzac Day service on the grounds, ahead of the official opening of the new facility.
Once completed, the Memorial Gardens will provide a meaningful and enduring space for reflection, remembrance, and community commemoration.
