​Cromwell town centre confirmed as key LTP investment priority

The Cromwell town centre redevelopment is moving forward once again, following earlier direction from Council and the Cromwell Community Board to pause the project until work on the 2027 Long-term Plan (LTP) was underway.

With LTP planning now in progress, Councillors and the Cromwell Community Board recently came together to revisit previous high-level work and align on the next steps for this important project.

As part of this renewed focus, elected members participated in a workshop this week to build a shared understanding of the journey so far and help shape the future direction of the redevelopment, which has been identified as a key investment area in the upcoming LTP.

The session provided an overview of how the project aligns with district-wide priorities, including social connectivity, growth management, infrastructure planning, and financial sustainability. It also offered an opportunity for robust discussion, questions, and feedback.

Mayor Tamah Alley said the workshop was a constructive step toward shaping a town centre that reflects Cromwell’s evolving needs.

“This redevelopment is about creating a thriving, accessible, and welcoming town centre that reflects Cromwell’s unique character and growing community,” Mayor Alley said. “Bringing elected members together to review the work to date and explore the next phase ensures we are aligned and well positioned to move forward.”

Cromwell Community Board Chair Anna Harrison said a key takeaway from the session was a shared commitment to getting the project underway and emphasised the importance of collaboration.

“It’s really important to have Council and the Community Board working together to progress the long-awaited Cromwell town centre project,” Ms Harrison said. “This workshop was a first step in making sure we all have the same information and common understandings of the journey so far, so we can confidently consider our next steps.”

The Cromwell town centre redevelopment remains focused on strengthening community spaces, improving connectivity, supporting local business vitality, and ensuring a town centre that serves as a vibrant gathering place for residents and visitors.
