Little Valley Road bridge now closed for repairs
Work has now begun on the next phase of Little Valley Bridge in Alexandra, an essential connection for our community and visitors, including those using the Otago Central Rail Trail.
From Thursday 19 February, the existing bridge is closed to ALL motor vehicles while the work is completed. This is a long-term closure, with the work due to be completed later this year.
Pedestrian and cycle access will be maintained during the repairs, including access under the bridge via the river path.
There may be delays for cyclists and pedestrians of up to 10 minutes on Friday, 20 February 2026, due to tree felling.
CODC Roading Manager Paul Fleet said while the closure will cause disruption, the work is essential to protect the bridge’s long-term future.
“We know this will inconvenience some users, but doing this work now ensures the bridge remains safe and reliable, and by acting early it also helps us avoid unexpected closures or costly emergency repairs in the future,” he said.
Completion of the refurbishment means the bridge will be restored to full weight capacity and provide improved accessibility for all users.
