CODC to harvest plantation pine forest in Cromwell
In 2025, the Cromwell Community Board (CCB) recommended that Council proceed with harvesting the plantation pine forest on Sandflat Road, with work scheduled to begin in April 2026. This forms part of a broader plan to harvest a separate pine block within an area identified for future industrial development on Bannockburn Road.
The approach will see both blocks harvested simultaneously, improving operational efficiency and maximising economic return from these forestry assets. Planted around 1980, the forests are now approximately 46 years old and have reached maturity, making this an appropriate time for harvesting.
The Sandflat Road plantation is located on endowment land, which is held for the benefit and betterment of the Cromwell community.
Council acknowledges that the forestry block has been used informally over many years as an off-leash dog walking area. This use was permitted by CODC; however, the off-leash status will be removed ahead of harvesting.
CODC has received an arborist report commissioned by a group of dog owners. However, the decision to harvest is not based on tree health, but on the planned and efficient management of a plantation forest at maturity.
Under the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS), CODC has four years following harvest to either replant the area or determine its future use. The Cromwell Community Board and Council will consider options for the Sandflat Road site after harvesting is complete.
