When you start seeing the pavers go down, and the topsoil coming in, in preparation for the lawn and landscaping, you know the finish line is in sight on a project.
The team behind Central Otago District Council's new community facility in Cromwell are delighted with the rapid progress, as their grand design enters its final months of construction.
With the interior fitout going along nicely, Council's construction partners Naylor Love have also been working at pace on the exterior, to get the Cromwell War Memorial Gardens on Melmore Terrace in front of the facility, established.
"The memorial garden to the right of the entry plaza, is pretty much as we were shown in the detailed plan," Cromwell RSA president Denis Ryan says. "The same elements from the old memorial site are back in place, including the gun, except the flagpoles have been moved so they're either side of the cenotaph in front of what will be the dedicated memorial wall and remembrance plaques.
“It could be our imagination, but we reckon the soldier on the cenotaph has had a smile on his face since he was moved from storage in early February. Although he could still be seen behind a fence out back, he's been pretty much missing in action for nearly two years, and seems happy in his new spot, in pride of place in the new memorial garden where he belongs.”
