​Cromwell Memorial Events Centre recommended as name for new facility

The Cromwell Community Board has recommended “Cromwell Memorial Events Centre ” as the preferred name for the town’s new community facility, following strong community feedback.

Opening in July 2026, the state-of-the-art venue, previously referred to as the Cromwell Memorial Hall, will serve as a vibrant hub for community, cultural, and commercial activity across the district.

At its meeting on 7 April, the Cromwell Community Board considered more than 600 submissions from across the district before deciding on the recommended name.

The feedback demonstrated strong community engagement, with many submitters emphasising the importance of choosing a name that reflects both local identity and the evolving role of the facility.

Most feedback came from Cromwell ward residents (82%), and regularly featured terms such as “Memorial”, “Events”, “Centre”, and “Cromwell” as suggestions for inclusion in the name.

The chosen name will sit alongside a te reo Māori name, gifted by mana whenua, which is expected to be unveiled later this month.

Board chair Anna Harrison said the decision was carefully considered, reflecting both community sentiment and the future role of the facility.

“We know the community had a lot to say about their preferred name, as the Memorial Hall holds deep meaning for a lot of people,” she said.

“There was robust discussion around the table to ensure the name reflects what matters most to our community, while also recognising the significance of this facility for future generations.

While we acknowledge the decision may not reflect every individual preference, we’ve worked hard to reach a thoughtful and respectful decision.”

As part of the engagement process, people could suggest their own name or build one from a list of options, with many choosing to do both.

Feedback provided insight into what people value most about the facility, including a desire to acknowledge the heritage of the site, connections to Cromwell and Central Otago identity, and the future purpose of the facility.

The Cromwell Community Board’s recommendation will now go to Council for consideration at its meeting on Wednesday 29 April 2026.
