It's been just over three months since Te Puna Mahara - Cromwell Memorial Events Centre opened its doors, and the new community facility has certainly hit the ground running.
As of 2 November, an impressive 75,012 visits have been recorded through the doors, while the venue has hosted 245 events, including one-off events alongside regular weekly and monthly activities.
From comedy and concerts to conferences, community markets, theatre, dance and sporting events, the programme has already demonstrated just how versatile the new facility can be.
Highlights have included the Global Taekwon-Do Championships, Latin Night Market, the Cromwell Volunteer Fire Brigade’s honours night, Rush! The Stage Musical, and Cromwell Primary School's production.
But it's not just the big events keeping the building busy. On any given day, visitors might find a yoga class underway, line dancers practising their steps, a corporate meeting in progress, or a community group making use of one of the many spaces.
Add to that the steady stream of people visiting AWA Eatery, The Cinema, Te Huika Wai - Cromwell Museum, and The Gift Shop, and there's rarely a quiet moment.
Cromwell Community Board Chair Anna Harrison says the first three months have been an exciting demonstration of what the community facility was built to achieve.
"One of the most rewarding things has been watching our community make Te Puna Mahara their own," she says.
"To see such a variety of people, groups and organisations using the building in so many different ways, and so soon after opening, is fantastic. It's quickly becoming part of everyday life in Cromwell, and that's exactly what we hoped this facility would achieve."
Central Otago District Council Group Manager, Community Experience, David Scoones, thanked everyone involved in bringing the facility to life.
“The dedication and hard work of the Te Puna Mahara team and wider Council staff has been incredible," he says.
"Seeing the community embrace the venue so enthusiastically is a fantastic reward for everyone involved.”
And there's no sign of things slowing down.
November's calendar includes the Economic Development New Zealand conference, RSA Remembrance Day activities, a line dancing social, and a women’s wellness workshop. The venue will also serve as an election polling centre, alongside its regular classes, cinema screenings, and community activities.
Looking further ahead, interest continues to grow, with bookings already underway for a busy 2027, including awards dinners, concert series, national conferences, musical performances, and large-scale functions.
With its first three months behind it, Te Puna Mahara is already establishing itself as a busy hub for community life, entertainment, and events in Central Otago.
And judging by the calendar ahead, it's only just getting started.
