Central Otago District Council is required by law to keep a register of all dogs in the district. As a dog owner, you are required to ensure your dog is registered by the time it is three months old.
Once your dog is registered, you are also required to re-register each year (each July). A notice and invoice will be sent to the registered owner with the contact details you provide prior to the registration period as a reminder that the next annual registration is due.
Online dog registrations
Dog owners will receive their dog registration renewal email and text in late June/early July. The notice includes a reference number that will allow access to the Reg the Dog website - www.regthedog.co.nz - to renew your dog registration. You will be able to renew your dog from 1 July.
Customers who have a new puppy or a new dog to be registered in the Central Otago district can also use the Reg the Dog website to register.
Simply enter your email address and the address of where your dog is kept and follow the step by step instructions. It's quick and easy, but if you do get stuck please call the Council on 03 440 0056.
There are also options to register your dog by phone and in person at any Council service centre for those without access to the internet.
All registrations should be paid by the 31 July as a 50% penalty gets automatically applied on 1 August increasing the fee from $55 to $82.50 (see fees below).
On 1 September, any outstanding registrations will receive a $300 Infringement for failure to register your dogs. So please get in now to avoid the fine.
You can pay online - here are the account details - 03-1733-0094176-000 using your name and dogs name as a reference.
Or you can go to https://www.regthedog.co.nz to complete your registration.
If you are having any problems, please email: firstname.lastname@example.org
Change of address or ownership
If you change address you need to notify Council to enable us to reunite you and your loved one (if they were to take themselves for a walk), but also to avoid any fines for not updating your details. If you buy or sell a dog you must also notify Council within 14 days. This can be via the online means or by phone.
