Cashless transfer stations
As of 1 November 2023, our waste transfer stations in Alexandra, Cromwell, Ranfurly and Roxburgh have gone cashless. All payments at the waste transfer stations will only be accepted by card (EFTPOS) or through an account. See leaflet for more info: (A4 Cashless Leaflet).

Asbestos must only be removed by a licensed professional who will access the correct containment and disposal methods. there is a list of licenced removalists on the WorkSafe Website. You can find it using this link: Asbestos Licence Holder Register l WorkSafe
Batteries. There will be no charge for uncorroded vehicle batteries, household single-use and rechargeable batteries such as button & coin batteries, alkaline batteries, lithium-ion batteries & nickel-cadmium or nickel-metal hydride batteries. Note: Batteries that are leaking, damaged or swollen will not be accepted.
General Waste. We will not accept oversized waste, controlled waste, hot ashes (separate skip bins available for cold ashes in Alexandra and Cromwell only), explosive, flammable oxidising corrosive substances, liquid waste, infectious substances, radioactive material, medical waste, any waste that can cause dust issues must be bagged.
Hardfill/Cleanfill
Accepted cleanfill: any uncontaminated material that consists solely of natural materials like soil, rock, gravel, clay, silt, and sand
Accepted hardfill: any uncontaminated material that includes any amount of unreinforced concrete, reinforced concrete where steel is cutback to concrete, asphalt, brick, pavers, clay pipes, tiles, or ceramics.
Not accepted:
- hazardous substances or materials derived from hazardous waste treatment stabilisation or disposal practices
- coal tar and other non-carcinogenic substances - materials from contaminated sites
- materials containing agricultural chemicals and herbicides
- domestic, commercial, and industrial waste including paint waste, oil, and grease
- steel treated timber, cables
- gib board or plastic
- materials containing human or animal waste
- any vegetation.
Please be aware that you may be asked to prove the contents and/or suitability of your material prior to acceptance for dumping.
* Hardfill is not accepted at Cromwell Transfer Station.
Fridges, freezers and air-conditioning unit charges at all transfer stations
As of 10 October 2022 there will be a disposal charge for fridges, freezers and air-conditioning units at all transfer stations. These appliances contain hydrofluorocarbons and other refrigerant gases, which are highly dangerous to people and the environment. These gases must be dealt with by a professional, so these costs have passed on.

As of 10 October 2022 tractor tyres will be accepted at all transfer stations.

Recycling can be taken to the following drop off points, free of charge:
- Alexandra - Alexandra Transfer Station on Boundary Road or outside the transfer station
- Outside Alexandra Transfer Station on Boundary Road
- Cromwell - Cromwell transfer station on Barry Avenue
- Omakau - Deaker Street (past school, before cemetery)
- Oturehua - behind Gilchrists store
- Patearoa - Patearoa Recreation Reserve
- Poolburn - Poolburn Hall, 142 Poolburn-Moa Creek Road (access via McIntosh Rd)
- Ranfurly Northland Street (Charlemont Street end of the car park) or Ranfurly Transfer Station on Drumglass Street
- Roxburgh Corner of Berwick and Till Street (next to the bowling club) or Roxburgh Transfer Station on Roxburgh East Road
