Vital maintenance is underway at the Ranfurly Wastewater Treatment Plant to remove built-up sludge from the oxidation pond and wetlands.
A recent survey identified a significant accumulation of sludge, prompting this planned desludging to ensure the system continues to operate efficiently and maintains high environmental performance standards.
Why this work is essential
This maintenance is a critical part of the treatment plant's lifecycle. Removing the sludge delivers two key operational benefits:
- Prolonged Retention Time: Sludge removal increases the pond's volume, which extends the time wastewater stays in the system, improving the overall treatment process.
- Improved Biological Treatment: Clearing excess material optimizes the biological processes within the pond system, ensuring the plant performs its role effectively.

Project Status and Timeline
The contract for this work has been awarded to Glasgow Contractors.

The project is well underway with the contractor's onsite desludging the ponds.
